A Year In Food

From New York to Costa Rica to Europe to California: 365 Days of Dining Out

Mar. 7.

The Last Course - Thanks to everyone who's read my blog, offered recommendations, provided criticisms and made comments. I've really enjoyed working on A Year In Food, through the many superlative meals and the few life-scarring ones. I wish I could've gotten through my entire European adventure and kept going in California, but I'm too busy and poor at the moment to make it worthwhile. As for what's next, my long-gestating novel will be done within the month, and I'm focusing on thrusting it into the waiting arms of inevitable rejection. I may also try another blog down the line, if inspiration happens to strike. (If so, I'll post about it here.) In the meantime, in lieu of petit fours, I offer you some of my favorite posts to conclude this last meal...

As you're growing up as a teenager, there are a number of things that you look forward to; getting your drivers

license, graduating from high school, going to your senior prom, having your first date and having your first beer.

The problem with this last one is that the drinking age and the thing you want make it something that you just can't

have yet. And still, you want it and will go to any lengths to get it.

Underage beer drinking is certainly no secret and to try to sweep it under the carpet isn't going to make it go

away. But the most odd thing about underage drinking when it comes to beer is that even after kids sneak their first

beer, they still want to have another one. If you're wondering why that sounds so strange then you need to think

back to when YOU had your first beer. It was pretty nasty tasting. Let's be honest, beer is bitter and is an

acquired taste. Very few people, if any at all, enjoyed their first beer. Many even get sick after it because of the

taste or the fact that they're not used to the alcohol yet.

The cuisines of Western countries are diverse by themselves, although there are common characteristics that distinguish Western cooking from cuisines of Asian countries. Compared with traditional cooking of Asian countries, meat is more prominent and substantial in serving, and Westerners traditionally have a far more in depth knowledge concerning specific methods of preparing and serving different cuts of meat than Asians. Steak in particular is a common dish across the West. Western cuisines also put in substantial emphasis on sauce (or called gravy in meat dishes) as condiments, seasonings, or accompaniments due to the difficulty of seasonings penetrating larger pieces of meat used in cooking. Plenty of dairy products are utilized in the cooking process, except for the nouvelle cuisine days. Spices are more prominent than many East and Southeast Asian cuisines due to the heavy use of meat. Carbohydrate staples play a more minor role than Asian cuisines.
